The position of NASSCO on Artificial intelligence for sewer systems . The National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASSCO) has established global standards for sewer infrastructure evaluation through certification programs such as PACP, LACP, and MACP. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into sewer infrastructure assessment is transforming the industry, with a focus on its role within the Pipeline Assessment Certification Program (PACP). AI applications span various areas in pipeline inspection and assessment including pipe deterioration analysis, sustainable funding assessments, and system optimization. However, challenges remain, such as maintaining data consistency, ensuring robust quality control, and adhering to NASSCO standards. AI technologies, particularly Machine Learning (ML) and Automated Defect Recognition (ADR), are being leveraged to enhance inspection processes by improving productivity, accuracy, and efficiency when managing large volumes of inspection data.
AI supports operator training, streamlines the coding of legacy inspection data, and optimizes workflows by serving as a preliminary inspection tool. Although AI systems are not yet fully certified by NASSCO for all PACP codes, they show promising potential for benchmarking and quality assurance. NASSCO underscores the importance of licensing agreements to safeguard the proper use of its intellectual property, ensuring compliance with PACP-related codes and facilitating seamless data integration. The upcoming PACP Version 8.0 will incorporate AI advancements to enhance data collection and management capabilities.
